The Zero Waste to Oceans Team visited today the Suwung Landfill in order to understand the magnitude of the problem Bali is facing regarding waste. Trucks full of trash enter the landfill every 2-3 minutes full of all sorts of organic and non organic waste. The trash is dumped on a designated area where the Pemulung (scavengers) look for recyclables like plastic bottles or aluminum cans. The landfill is like a little office, it even has a couple of warungs (one on the picture) that serve hot, cold drinks and snacks, but the smell and working conditions are quite far from your AC office room.
This visit is part of a research the Zero Waste to Oceans Team is doing to better understand the roots of the problem.
The landfill might never disappear but we can create a better and safer place for all these people to work.By 2050, there will be more plastic than fish in the ocean. http://ow.ly/5JJz304nnje
