In the spring of 2015 the old EcoPark learning center was flourishing. We were hosting waste to wonder half day tours to children from all over Indonesia. Three years ago, we did not have the funds to pay our lease by the end of the year. We told the landlord then that we would pay a penalty of a 1% increase the following year. Little did we know, the landlord had given away 2000 square meters of our legally leased land to the next door neighbor, the Pastika Family. After this, another family, the Camel family, also placed a 5 meter rod across the top of the property. They later placed another 2 meters down the other side of our leased property. They began cutting roads across our land. The landlord then began asking us to pay the lease, but these families had already destroyed our EcoPark learning center.
The Burning of the EcoPark and the Aftermath
Mr. Pastika decided in order to protect his family’s land during this dispute and scare us away he set fire to it. This was a huge issue as we had BaliWise students living on the land of our old EcoPark. We then had to construct to dormitories for our BaliWise girls at our home office on Jalan Siligita. We used donations from crowdfunding. This new Zero Waste to Oceans Education and Demonstration Center is on land a ROLE director owns. This will prevent further issues like this. At this new park we will teach children, local government officials, and businesses on how to produce ZERO WASTE in their communities, the importance of sustainability and how they can be more environmentally conscious. This will be part of our Zero Waste to Oceans program.
