Project Clean Uluwatu, before named Ecu Surf Rescue Uluwatu, a committee of local business owners, residents, and volunteers from Uluwatu worked on the development of a waste management system for the Uluwatu surf break and the river system that runs down through the cave. Uluwatu is, next to Padang Padang a famous destination for surfers worldwide and started to develop environmental hazards because no policy or environmental practices were enforced. With the collaboration of different stakeholders in which ROLE Foundation (ROLE) also took part of, the project raised $50,000 with a fundraising campaign and build and install a liquid and solid waste management system in Uluwatu. This project was designed with the initial thought that when the waste management system would be fully functional and in operation, the waste management would be handed over to the local committee for continues management.
Project Clean Uluwatu collapsed
When the project was handed over to the local committee, the management got ignored and caused the system to not function anymore. Also, the company Eco Bali that picked up the collected waste from the project location for recycling got send away because the local Banjar wanted to pick up the waste themselves. Since 2016 there has been no action according to the waste management system. The marketing and social media channels were still running until last week, that is why we are taking action again.
